Today I‘m releasing my latest song, “dance”. This last year has been challenging on so many levels. It‘s also been so surreal – the uncertainty, the fear, the lockdown, the isolation. Sheltering in place, we unlearned being around others. Music is a relief. Dancing in solitude as well, but only to a point. I started writing this song when I was walking through northern Spain on the Camino de Santiago more than four years ago, when I was in dire need of alone-time to regain some clarity of mind. My parents’ families were expelled from their homes at the end of World War II, which caused incredible bitterness and resentments that lingered over decades and was never directly addressed. “Prevail” is about my conscious journey to overcome those poisonous thoughts and to break free from that past that never was mine to begin with. Today I’m launching my first single, “purpose”. This is the result of a multi-year journey – one morning in early 2016 I woke up with the hook playing in my head, and the first version of the lyrics dates back to March of that year. Built myself some gobos (acoustic panels)! Many Swiss houses have their own air-raid shelters in the basement. I’ve repurposed ours for my vocal recordings but haven’t been entirely happy with sound reflections from the bare concrete; and the Caotica Eyeball that I used has some drawbacks too. That’s why I now set out to create my own gobos (instructions). Nearly done with five of them! It was good to be building something with my hands once again, it’s been a while. A few years ago, I had restarted making music. Back then I thought: I know how to sing; I know how to write music and record it and can brush up on some production skills with YouTube videos. I’ll create a few songs, put them out on YouTube and SoundCloud, and there’ll be a lot of great resonance. Boy – was I wrong. It was quite painful to read some of the comments from independent reviewers. Many people probably would have given up.
